The annual Highland Festival was held at the Richmond green on the 18-2-18, This event is Tasmania's only Highland gathering and I was lucky enough to be able to attend. This event consists of a number of competitions between local pipe bands, a number of stalls selling Scottish goods and food vans to feed the ever growing attendees.
Covered by the local news paper the mercy they reported the following.
"Pipe Major David North, from the Tasmania Police Pipe Band, said the festival was a celebration of Scottish culture and Highlands heritage.
“In Tasmania we have a rich Scottish heritage and this is about the homeland, dancing and music,” he said.
“People go who want to see kilts and hear bagpipes played and the reception for that is amazing. The colourful highland dancers are great too.”
We all know about them and it seems that either you love them or you hate them but why? There is obviously the stigma of the Selfie stick being used by only tourists and let's face it, quite often you can look kind of odd posing to a selfie stick, or even see some strange poses including this lady who clearly did not care that the selfie stick was still attached to her phone when that very important call came through. But hey each to their own! Myself I believe that they have a place in a photographer's kit and here's why.
You don't need anyone but yourself
They only cost $5!
That's right my trusty selfie stick although a base model only cost me a whopping $5 and the amount of times that I have used it it has more the paid for itself! When you consider how much some photography gear can cost, this is an affordable tool that will allow you to do something a little different as long as you are imaginative! Enough said.
Trying something new
Just because the majority of people think that this device has no place in the professional world of photography does not mean that is true, it is all about how you use it! If you just stand there and pout “duck lips” and get you in the shot then yea, OK, that's just the stock standard and generic traveller photo (what people seem to frown upon) but if you really take the time to compose an image like you would with your DSLR then your options are limitless. Don't be afraid of what others say, get yourself a selfie stick today and take those shots others are missing because of stubbornness!
